Did you know that your hair type (curly, fine, thick, etc.) determines which kind of hair brush you should use? Yup. Here’s the lowdown.

  • Long, straight hair: Use an oval shaped brush or flat paddle brush with bristles that are spaced wide apart. These brushes will most likely be cushioned because the cushioning helps avoid stretching or breaking long hair.

  • Long, curly/thick hair. If your long hair is thick and/or curly, an oval brush or flat brush can also work well, but just make sure the brush itself is extra strong/heavy duty (and consider using ones with wire bristles).

  • Fine hair: Choose brushes with softer bristles, which make sense, since your hair is a bit more delicate.

  • Short hair: Round brushes can work well, especially when you’re blow drying. These brushes are exactly as they sound: the barrel is round (like a roller) and the bristles cover the entire barrel.

There are MANY variations on these brushes, including half-radial brushes and vented brushes.  When in doubt, ask your hairdresser because he or she will know your hair and how you like to wear it. In a few days, we’ll give you tips on caring for your brushes.
